  1. 1

In a bowl, mix the beef mince, grated onion, garlic, cumin, garam masala, salt and pepper until well combined. Shape into small balls, about the size of a walnut.

  2. 2

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium high heat. Add the meatballs and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides, they do not need to be fully cooked through yet. Remove and set aside on a plate.

  3. 3

In the same pan, add the chopped onion and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until softened.

  4. 4

Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric and chilli powder and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  5. 5

Add the chopped tomatoes and water. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

  6. 6

Return the meatballs to the pan, cover, and simmer for 15 to 18 minutes, turning occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through with no pink in the middle and the sauce has thickened.

  7. 7

Scatter with fresh coriander before serving with rice or naan.
