Yellow Split Pea Dal

Ingredients

For 2 servings

  • yellow split peas, rinsed150 g
  • water600 ml
  • turmeric1/2 tsp
  • vegetable oil1 tbsp
  • onion, chopped1/2
  • garlic clove, crushed1
  • grated ginger1/2 tsp
  • ground cumin1 tsp
  • chilli powder1/4 tsp
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander, to serve

    Put the rinsed split peas, water and turmeric in a pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and starting to break down. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface.

    While the split peas cook, heat the oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until softened.

    Add the garlic, ginger, cumin and chilli powder. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

    Once the split peas are soft, stir the spiced onion mixture into the pan. Season with salt and simmer for a further 5 minutes to let the flavours combine.

    Scatter with fresh coriander before serving with rice or flatbread.
